During the all day birding trip there has to be something of a pause in proceedings, the National Trust do not allow anyone to land on the Inner Farne island until after 1330, this gives the Arctic Terns something of a respite from the hundreds of visitors that arrive each day. To fill in time the boat crew take you on a tour of some of the smaller islets where the Grey Seal population haul out to rest. Get too close and they have a habit of ejecting a snotty shower of mucus as a "keep away" response. Fortunately no one in our boat suffered such a fate though it was mighty close.
